Is it a flag, banner, feather banner or pennant?

What is the difference among a flag, banner and pennant? People call ours flags, banners, feather banners and “What do you call those.” We get all versions. It matters not to us what you want to use – banner, flag or whatever. Technically they are banners. Here is the difference.

Flags: Flags are designed to be flown horizontally, with the short side attached to a pole. They can be square but are most often rectangular.

Banners:  Banners are typically flown vertically. The longest edge is on the pole.  Some times the vertical pole has a cross piece that sticks out at the top and the banner hangs down off that.

Feather Banners:  These are banners which are vertical and hung on a pole. The exact origin is uncertain but they are tall and narrow like a feather. People in the kiting community often refer to all banners as feather banners. Most typically they are about two feet wide and thirteen feet tall.

Pennants: Pennants are most commonly triangular with two equal long edges and a narrow edge. The narrow edge can be attached to a pole. They are also commonly hung on walls with the narrow side to the top.

We make banners in all sizes. Our smallest banner so far is two feet by two feet. We make the typical feather banners too. Some are as narrow as 19 inches and others about two feet. We are most known for our MEGA banners which are three to five feet wide (most commonly four feet) and fifteen feet tall on sixteen foot poles.
